Gathering survey data
Observational surveys were conducted on 4th and 5th July 2015 in order to investigate park utilization on typical weekends. Weekends were chosen as the focus of this analysis as it is likely that these are the days when park utilization is at its peak. Surveys were carried out at three intervals (10am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm, 4pm to 7pm), in line with SGC sensor data collection timings. The interval between 7am to 10am was excluded as the spatial extent of environmental data collected was too limited to make any correlation.
Each observational survey involved walking BAMK park from end-to-end and geotagging locations where visitors remained in fixed spots (ie cyclists and joggers were excluded). ArcGIS collector was used to facilitate data collection, which included the number of people at a spot, activity (eg. Dogs’ Corner, Exercising, Food & Beverage, Hangout Place, Lovers’ Corner), as well as GPS coordinates. We ensured that all parts of the park were surveyed , and not only areas near walking tracks. Raw survey data points can be visualized via our Dashboard for Planners.
